BS 2869:2017 pdf download – Fuel oils for agricultural , domestic and industrial engines and boilers Specification
4.3Sampling middle distillate fuels from retail site pumps and commercial site fuel dispensers
All sampling of middle distillate fuels from retail site pumps and commercial site fuel dispensers shallbe carried out in accordance with the relevant procedures of BS EN 14275.
NOTE Attention is drawn to The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure ReceptaclesRegulations 2009 (CDG2009)[3] and the European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of DangerousGoods by Road (ADR) 2009[4], with reference to sampling cans.
4.4Storage and labelling
Samples shall be kept in a cool place, away from sources of direct heat, although it is not necessary tokeep them refrigerated.
NOTE1 Ifleft in direct sunlight, there is a danger that the cans could become pressurized through expansion oftheir contents.
Full and legible information relating to the source of the sample shall be attached to the can in such amanner that it cannot easily become subsequently detached.
NOTE 2 lf required, the sample can be sealed and labeled to maintain the legal integrity.Attention is also drawnto Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations 2009 [5] with reference to the hazardlabelling of sarmples.
5 Composition5.1 General
Fuels shall be predominantly hydrocarbon oils derived from petroleum refining except in the caseof middle distillate fuels (see 6.1), where up to a maximum of 7.0% (V/V) of fatty acid methyl ester(FAME) conforming to BS EN 14214 is specified, and in the residual grades, where a finished gas oil isused in the supply chain to adjust viscosity values.
Hydrocarbons such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), Gas To Liquid (GTL) or Biomass To Liquid(BTL)derived hydrocarbons shall also be allowed in any proportions, as these are paraffinic dieselcomponents, provided that the final blend complies with the requirements of this British Standard. The co-processing of renewable feedstock at refineries shall also be permitted, provided that the finalfuel meets the requirements of this British Standard.
NOTE1 lt is strongly recommended to add oxidation stability-enhancing additives in any FAME component, at theproduction stage and before storage, to provide an action similar to that obtained with 1 000 mg/kg of 2,6-ditert-buty)l-4-methylphenol (butylated hydroxy toluene,”BHT”).Some installations currently utilized for the storage, handling and combustion of fuels conforming to this British Standard are not resistant to FAME at the maximumconcentrations specified. Users are advised to satisfy themselves that materials in use are compatible with blends ofFAME, where supplied.
NOTE2 Industry guidance is available for the selection of materials compatible with FAME,and for operabilityfactors in general, e.g. from The oil companies’ European association for environment, health and safety in refiningand distribution(CONCAWE),”Guidelines for handling and blending FAME”- Report No.9/09[oJ.
Fuels shall not contain components or adventitious matter likely to interfere with normal operationof equipment, for which the correct class of product is intended.Fuels shall be free from any
adulterant or contaminant that might render the fuel unacceptable for use in their intendedapplication.
5.2 Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl (MMT)
COMMENTARY ON 5.2
MMT is a metallic additive that can be used in automotive distillate fuel for non-road mobile machinery(Class A2), but whose presence is limited since 1 Jjanuary 2011 (see Directive 2011/63/EU of 1 Jjune 2011amending, for the purpose of its adaptation to technical progress, Directive 98/70/EC of the EuropeanParliament and of the Council relating to the quality of petrol and diesel fuels [10]).
When methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) is used in Class A2 fuel, a specificlabelling shall be used (see 8.3).
NOTE The presence of the MMT is limited via a manganese content limit as in Table 1a, Part 1.
