4 General
In general, pH requirement of pickled sheep pelts should be ascertained before grading. The pH of the
pickled sheep pelt should be 2,0 ± 0,2.
For the purpose of the grading system, pickled sheep pelts are graded based on:
a) defects;
b) size.
5 Grading on the basis of defects
5.1 Grade I
Pickled sheep pelts of Grade I should have the following qualities:
a) generally free from defects and damages;
b) defects and damages not exceeding 10 % of the total area;
c) free from defects like score marks, warble holes, meat, fat, pox marks, cockles;
d) fleshy with good quality and fine grain.
Pickled sheep pelts that belong to Grade I but have a thinner skin should be regarded as Grade II.
5.2 Grade II
Pickled sheep pelts of Grade II should have the following qualities:
a) defects and damages in the range of 11 % to 20 % of the total area;
b) neck and shoulder free from defects and damages.
5.3 Grade III
Pickled sheep pelts of Grade III should have the following qualities:
a) defects and damages in the range of 21 % to 40 % of the total area;
b) 75 % of the neck and shoulders free from damages.
5.4 Grade IV
Pickled sheep pelts of Grade IV should have defects and damages in the range of 41 % to 70 % of the total area.
5.5 Grade V
Pickled sheep pelts of Grade V should have defects and damages exceeding 70 % of the total area.
6 Tabular and graphical representation of the classification system
Table 1 summarizes the grades according to the location, concentration, depth and surface area of the defects. An explanation of the code numbers used is given in Table 2.
7 Grading on the basis of size
7.1 General
Pickled sheep pelts may be graded on the basis of area with the following classifications.
7.2 Extra large
The area of 12 pickled sheep pelts should be more than 108 ft 2 (10 m 2 ).
7.3 Large
The area of 12 pickled sheep pelts should be 85 ft 2 to 108 ft 2 (7.9 m 2 to 10 m 2 ).
7.4 Medium
The area of 12 pickled sheep pelts should be 61 ft 2 to 84 ft 2 (5.7 m 2 to 7.8 m 2 ).
7.5 Small
The area of 12 pickled sheep pelts should be 37 ft 2 to 60 ft 2 (3.4 m 2 to 5.6 m 2 ).
7.6 Extra small
